Clusters of Energy - MULADHARA CHAKRA
The Root Chakra, known as Muladhara, is the first of the seven main chakras and lies at the base of the spine. Deeply connected to the earth element and represented by the colour red, this chakra governs our sense of stability, grounding, and survival. It forms the energetic foundation for all aspects of life.
When Muladhara is balanced, we feel grounded, safe, and supported. There’s a deep sense of belonging — in our bodies, our environments, and our lives. We feel steady, capable of meeting our basic needs, and equipped to face challenges with clarity and courage. This strong foundation allows us to move through life with a greater sense of ease, presence, and purpose.
The energy of the Root Chakra supports our most fundamental human instincts — self-preservation, shelter, food, and physical well-being. It’s what gives us the confidence to take action in the physical world and trust that our needs will be met. A healthy root chakra also nurtures our ability to stay present, connected to the here and now, rather than being caught up in fear, uncertainty, or survival mode.
When this chakra is underactive or imbalanced, it can show up as anxiety, insecurity, restlessness, or disconnection from the body. We may feel ungrounded, overly fearful, or find it hard to make practical decisions. On a physical level, this may manifest as fatigue, low energy, or a general sense of instability. The world can feel overwhelming when the root isn’t anchored.
Fortunately, there are simple ways to strengthen and rebalance Muladhara. Earth-based practices are key — walking barefoot on natural surfaces, gardening, or simply spending time outdoors can help reconnect us to the grounding qualities of the earth. “Moon” style practices, calming breath-work, and especially engaging Mula Bandha at the end of an exhale can be incredibly effective in drawing energy down and stabilising the system.
Ultimately, the Root Chakra is the starting point for deeper inner work. When it is steady and nourished, it becomes much easier to explore the subtler aspects of practice and life. A strong Muladhara provides the resilience, presence, and grounded awareness needed to move forward with confidence — both on and off the mat.
