The Five Koshas - VIJNANAMAYA
VIJÑĀNAMAYA KOŚA
The Vijñānamaya Kośa is the sheath of higher intelligence, wisdom, discernment (viveka), and deep inner knowing. It is the seat of the buddhi, the faculty of intuition and discrimination that allows us to see clearly, beyond the fluctuations of the thinking mind.
It is here that our inner teacher resides, quietly guiding us toward our Dharma, our deepest purpose and the path most aligned with our true nature.
Although this wisdom is always present, it is often drowned out by the noise of the senses, the chatter of the mind, and the conditioning of the ego (ahamkāra). When we become disconnected from this sheath, we make decisions based on fear, habit, or external influence rather than inner truth.
Vijñānamaya Kośa represents pure intelligence, inspired insight, self-awareness, and conscious will. It is the bridge between our individual awareness and the greater Cosmic Intelligence (Īśvara), allowing us to recognise that true wisdom doesn’t come from accumulating more information, it arises from within.
As this sheath awakens, we begin to live with greater clarity and discernment. We no longer react impulsively to life’s circumstances but respond with presence and wisdom. We see beyond appearances and begin to recognise the deeper meaning, lessons, and opportunities for growth hidden within every experience.
The “wool is no longer pulled over our eyes.” We become less easily influenced by the opinions, fears, and expectations of others, and instead develop a quiet confidence rooted in inner authority. We stop giving our power away, take greater responsibility for our choices, and begin to trust our own direct experience.
Everything we seek already exists within us. Yoga doesn’t give us wisdom, it removes the obstacles that prevent us from recognising the wisdom that has always been there.
Notice the difference between the voice of fear and the voice of wisdom. Then ask yourself: Which one am I choosing to follow?
