Seven Tongues of the Fire - RUDRANI
Rudrani, the Centre Piece of the Sacred Fire
There is a fire within you that does not destroy, but transforms. It refines, awakens, and clears the heaviness that keeps us bound to old patterns. In the yogic system, this is the path of Kundalini, our dormant spiritual potential, and when awakened specifically at the navel centre, it is known as Rudrani. This is the technical name for activated Kundalini at the navel and is considered the cornerstone of Traditional Hatha Yoga.
Over the past month at Bhav, we have been exploring this sacred fire through practice, breath, awareness, and discipline. What began as the activation of the inner fire has now evolved into something deeper. Having discovered this sacred flame within the navel, we have moved into the exploration of the Seven Tongues of the Fire, seven aspects of practice and life that help sustain transformation long after the initial spark is lit.
Each tongue represents a way of refining awareness, recognising old programs and unconscious habits, and developing the ability to continually evolve rather than fall back into limitation. These teachings are not only about what happens on the mat, but how we live, respond, relate, and carry ourselves in everyday life. The fire is only powerful if it is maintained.
This week we enter the fourth tongue of the fire, Rudrani. Sitting proudly at the centre of all seven tongues, Rudrani represents the very essence of the fire itself. It is the reminder of what we are truly keeping alive within us. Not simply intensity or ambition, but conscious transformation. The unwavering commitment to truth, awareness, discipline, and inner evolution.
In Tantra philosophy, much of human suffering comes from identification with the three lower chakras. These centres are connected to survival, fear, attachment, control, and the constant search for security. While they are necessary parts of human life, remaining trapped within them keeps us moving in cycles of reaction rather than conscious evolution. The force that liberates us from this is Kundalini Shakti, and the most stable place for this awakening is the navel centre, the home of Manipura Chakra.
Manipura is the seat of willpower, transformation, and inner fire. It is here that Bhuta Agni, the elemental fire, becomes central. Bhuta Agni is not only the fire of digestion, but the deeper intelligence that digests life itself, our experiences, emotions, and karmic patterns. When this fire is weak, there is stagnation, indecision, and heaviness. When it is strong, there is clarity, courage, discipline, and the power to move forward with purpose.
Foundational Hatha Yoga texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita describe this centre as the meeting point of Prana Vayu and Apana Vayu. When these two forces unite, they ignite Jathara Agni, the inner digestive fire, creating the conditions for Kundalini to awaken. This awakening at the navel is Rudrani, symbolised by the fierce and compassionate Goddess Durga, representing resilience, protection, and inner strength.
To work with this fire is not about chasing mystical experiences. It is about becoming more present, more powerful, and more responsible with your own life force. It is about stepping beyond instinctive living and into conscious transformation. The fire at the navel teaches discipline, trust, and the understanding that true power is cultivated from within.
This week, as we move deeper into the Seven Tongues of the Fire and into the essence of Rudrani itself, let your practice become a remembering of what you are truly here to keep alive.
This is the heart of Traditional Hatha Yoga. Not performance, but transformation. Not escape, but embodiment.
Let the navel be your source of power. Let the fire rise. Let Rudrani awaken.
