40 Day Challenge - EXPANSION

Week Five: Expansion

As we enter week five of our 40-Day Journey, we step into the next stage of Hatha Yoga: Expansion. Last week, we explored Sensitivity. We began to recognise Prana, the vital energy moving beneath our thoughts, emotions and physical body. We discovered that there is another layer of experience available when the mind becomes quiet enough to perceive it. Now the practice deepens. Expansion is about increasing our capacity to use energy wisely. We begin to understand that energy isn’t simply something we have, it’s something we can cultivate, contain, shape and direct with intention.

There is a simple truth within yoga: Where attention goes, energy flows. Every day, our energy is moving somewhere. Into our work. Into our relationships. Into our habits. Into our worries. Into our distractions. The question is no longer whether we have energy. The question becomes: Where is it going?

Expanding Our Capacity

Expansion isn’t about having more energy for the sake of doing more. It is about increasing our capacity to hold, direct and express Prana without leaking it unnecessarily. Imagine pouring water into a cracked vessel. No matter how much you add, it continues to escape. Much of our energy is lost in unconscious patterns, overthinking, unnecessary tension, distraction and reactions that pull us away from what matters most. As our awareness develops, we begin to notice these leaks. Rather than constantly trying to generate more energy, we learn to preserve it, refine it and consciously invest it where it has the greatest value. This is where the practice becomes more intentional.

Working with Prana Vayu

This week, our focus is Prana Vayu, the inward-moving, revitalising force connected to the heart and lungs. Prana Vayu governs our ability to receive. Every inhale becomes an opportunity to welcome life more fully. It supports vitality, resilience and the immune system, reminding us that true strength isn’t only found in what we give, but also in our capacity to receive. Many of us are comfortable giving. Receiving can be more challenging. Yet every conscious inhale is an act of receiving. Every moment of presence is an act of receiving. Every time we soften enough to allow life to meet us, Prana Vayu becomes stronger.

The Practice of Expansion

This week, we work with backbends, postures that encourage openness through the front body and invite the breath into the heart and chest. Unlike the inward quality of the Moon practices, these postures begin to introduce the electric qualities of the Sun. Rather than forcing openness, we allow it to emerge from the stable foundation we have already built. The breath becomes our guide. The chest expands. The ribs widen. The heart space opens. And with that openness comes an opportunity to experience Prana more fully. Expansion is not about pushing beyond our limits. It is about allowing our capacity to grow with awareness.

Living with Intention

The deeper purpose of this week extends far beyond the yoga mat. As our relationship with Prana strengthens, we begin to ask different questions. What gives me energy? What drains it? Where am I investing my attention? Where am I unconsciously leaking it? When we become aware of where our energy is flowing, we gain the ability to choose differently. This is where yoga becomes a way of living. Rather than reacting to life, we begin directing our energy towards what is meaningful. We nourish what we want to grow. We release what no longer serves us.

As you move through this week, become curious about your relationship with energy. Notice how your breath changes your state. Notice how your attention influences your energy. Notice how opening the heart and chest through backbends affects your experience. The first four weeks taught us to become present, calm, stable and sensitive. Now we begin to expand. Not by chasing more energy, but by learning to receive it, contain it and direct it wisely. Because when Prana is cultivated with awareness, it becomes more than vitality. It becomes a force that shapes the way we live.
