40 Day Challenge - PRESENCE

PRESENCE: The Beginning of Transformation

Before we can change, we must first become present. As we begin our 40-Day Challenge, our first theme is Presence.

Forty days is long enough to create meaningful change, but the purpose of these first days is not to rush towards becoming a different version of ourselves.

It is to pause. To become present. To observe what is actually here.

The traditional teachings of Hatha Yoga describe a progressive journey of transformation. We don’t begin by asking the body and mind to do more than they are ready for. First, we prepare the ground.

We purify. We strengthen. We stabilise.

And from that foundation, we develop the capacity to go deeper.

First, We Become Present

We often move through life on autopilot, following habits, reacting to circumstances and repeating patterns without really seeing them. Presence interrupts this.

It is the simple but powerful act of paying attention to what is happening right now.

How does your body feel?

How is your breath moving?

What is the quality of your mind?

What thoughts keep appearing?

What patterns are influencing your choices?

What are you avoiding?

What are you holding onto?

The purpose isn’t to judge what we discover. There is nothing to fix yet. There is simply something to see. Because we cannot consciously transform something we are not aware of.

Purification and Strengthening

The early stages of Hatha Yoga prepare the practitioner by purifying and strengthening the body and mind. The journey of transformation and evolution is not easy.

Purification isn’t about becoming perfect or somehow getting rid of everything we don’t like about ourselves. It is about clearing what obstructs the natural flow of prāṇa and awareness.

Strengthening isn’t simply about becoming physically stronger. We develop steadiness, resilience, discipline and the capacity to remain present when things become uncomfortable.

The body becomes a stronger and healthier vessel. The breath becomes more refined. The mind becomes more stable. And we begin to develop the capacity required for the journey ahead.

The 40-Day Journey

This first week is therefore not about changing everything. It’s about meeting ourselves exactly where we are. Perhaps you discover that your body is tighter than you realised. Perhaps your mind is more restless than you thought. Perhaps you notice patterns of distraction, avoidance, impatience or self-doubt.

That’s okay. Awareness is not failure. Awareness is the beginning.

Over the coming weeks, we will begin to refine, adjust and transform but we first need the clarity to know what actually needs our attention.

This is why presence comes first. You can’t refine what you haven’t noticed. You can’t strengthen what you haven’t identified. You can’t transform what you are unwilling to see.

Begin Where You Are

So don’t approach these first days with the pressure to become your “best self.” Instead, become deeply interested in the self that is already here.

Show up. Breathe. Practise. Observe. Listen. And become present.

The goal isn’t to change who you are in these first days. The goal is to become conscious of who you are.

From that awareness, we can begin the real work.

Over the next 40 days, we will progressively build the strength, clarity and capacity to refine ourselves, not into someone we think we should be, but towards the fullest expression of who we are capable of becoming.

The journey begins here.

Be here.
