PRANA IN THE SPINE

Sushumna, meaning “sacred stream,” refers not to a physical structure but to a subtle, transcendental channel within the human energetic system. In Sri Vidya, it is described as a “state of consciousness” and is revered as the most vital and powerful pathway for spiritual awakening.

Though the physical spine mirrors Sushumna’s path, the two are not the same. Developing awareness of the spine is important, but to truly access Sushumna, one must move beyond the physical and into the subtle realm of prana. This requires intuitive sensing rather than intellectual understanding.

Central to Tantra Hatha Yoga is the merging of prana and consciousness within this central channel. Before the Sushumna can be awakened, it must first be accessed through the balancing of the solar and lunar energies — known as Pingala and Ida Nadis. Pingala (the right nostril) connects to the left hemisphere of the brain and governs dynamic, active qualities. Ida (the left nostril) relates to the right hemisphere and supports calming, receptive states.

Normally, these two nadis dominate in alternating cycles, rarely balancing at the same time. True access to Sushumna — and the possibility for deeper awakening, including kundalini activation — arises only when the solar and lunar channels are harmonised for extended periods.

At Bhav Yoga Studio this week, we explore the theme of Prana in the Spine, recognising the central channel as the key to deepening both our practice and our connection to higher states of being. By refining our sensitivity to the inner flows of prana, we create the conditions for balance, harmony, and spiritual expansion.

Our approach at Bhav moves beyond just physical postures. We invite you to enter the deeper energetic dimensions of yoga, where the true transformation occurs. Through conscious breathwork, subtle awareness, and intentional practice, we begin to awaken the sacred stream within.

Join us this week as we journey into the mysteries of Prana in the Spine, cultivating a practice that not only strengthens the body but also elevates the spirit. Together, let’s explore the profound power of prana and the limitless possibilities it opens within us.
